The National Park Service recognizes the Orchard Mesa segment! ALERT: Portion of The Old Spanish Trail & Gunnison River Bluffs Trail will be closed Due to construction activities occurring along a portion of The Sisters Trails the trail system there will be limited access for recreational use, including hiking, biking and horseback riding from August 31, 2011 to September 14, 2011. • From the 28 ½ Road trailhead, trail closure occurs approximately 2 miles on the Old Spanish Trail and approximately 3.5 miles on the Gunnison River Bluffs Trail. You will be able to connect to each trail and loop back to the trailhead. • From the Coffman Road trailhead, trail closure occurs at approximately 1.5 miles on the Old Spanish Trail and approximately 3 miles on the Gunnison River Bluffs Trail. You will be unable to connect to either trail and must turn back from each closure point. The distance measurements are estimates only. The mission of the Orchard Mesa Neighbors in Action is to preserve and enhance the unique character of Orchard Mesa. Orchard Mesa is located in Mesa County, Colorado. It encompasses both incorporated portions of Grand Junction and unincorporated portions of the county. We are unique geographically, since much of Orchard Mesa is 100 feet or more above both the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers. Because of an efficient canal system, however, Orchard Mesa is home to verdant orchards and vineyards - and to the south, hosts a unique desert environment - The Old Spanish Trail and the Gunnison River Bluffs - that is home to Desert Blue Jays, foxes, coyotes, rabbits, owls, eagles and numerous plants such as Prickly Pear Cactus, 4 O'Clocks, Desert Daisies and Moon Flowers.
